This is the second part of the blog titled ” Jesus Shows Us How to Love God” which I began last week. Jesus shows us how to love God through our commitment, priority, and availability to Him. Here’s the link for that blog should you want to review what that’s about /https://www.cosdavis.com/jesus-shows-us-how-to-love-god-part-one/
Openness. A particular scripture about Jesus comes to mind when He shows us how to love God. It is about growth toward God and realizing one’s purpose. This has nothing to do with a lack of moral perfection on Jesus’ part but a steady, deliberate progression toward finishing God’s plan.
The scripture is Luke’s comment about Jesus as a young child, “And the child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.” (Luke 2:40). Jesus’ life showed an eagerness to grow into and complete the mission for which he was sent. He did not stop short or quit when things got tough. Thank God, he was willing to grow into the work he completed at the cross. Remember, his final words from the cross were, “It is finished.”
Loving God requires that we have an open heart to him. Remember, this is a relationship, and like all flourishing relationships, it requires that we stay open to God’s voice and leadership if we want to know him and love him well.
Obedience. What is the ultimate test of whether or not you love God?
My young children learned to say, “I love you, Daddy.” These same words were often said to me when I corrected them because they had not done what I told them to do. In these situations, I heard the familiar words in pleading tones, “I love you, Daddy.” How did I respond? My response was, “ I love you, too. If you love me, do what I tell you to do.”
One of the best ways for a child to show love and respect for a caring parent is to obey their instructions. No caring parent will tell their child to do something harmful to them. Neither does our perfect, loving Father ask anything of us that is harmful to us. His will is to bless us and help us grow to spiritual maturity. Loving God through doing what he asks is for our protection and growth. God’s will is the best thing that could ever happen to
Do you love God? Take a few moments to think about how Jesus shows us how to love the Father. Are you committed to God’s will for your life? Do you put God first in your life, and give him priority over everything and everyone in your life? Do you begin your days making yourself available for God to use you as He pleases? Are you open to God for Him to lead you into a deeper relationship with Him? And, will you choose to obey him in all things as He guides you?
Next week we will try to answer the question, “What does God want from Me?” Thanks for reading.
