Heaven’s currency is something that should be of interest to all of us. This is especially true in light of what’s happening to the dollar, the currency of our country. Inflation is a big concern for most of us these days. We are noticing that our dollars are shrinking, buying mush less than they were a year ago. My car’s gas tank is about half full (or half empty if you tend to see things negatively) and I’m dreading to face the price indicator as I pump the gas again. How about you? Are you food, gas, and prices for other essentials going up?
Why would a blog on Heaven’s Currency be of any interest to you? Before I answer that question, allow me to mention a couple of other things for context. The use of currency as a form of exchange for goods and services dates back to Mesopotamia, almost five thousand years ago. Today, we can use checks or plastic cards instead of government issued currency to buy what we want. These forms of payment are not the real thing but represent the assumption that you have the real thing (money) in a bank or financial institution to cover your purchase.
As you may know, the title of my new book is Heaven’s Currency, Investing In The Things That Matter Most. Obviously, I have some interest in the medium of exchange for heaven. I believe in the reality of heaven, the spiritual world I do not see or experience with my physical senses. I believe God and Jesus are there, and I believe heaven operates on a set of values and principles that are very different from, and often in direct contrast to those practiced by many leaders and people in this world.
If you read my book, you will come away with the distinct understanding that you live in two worlds, two realities that are often in conflict. Your wealth in this temporal world is measured by how much money you possess or holdings that can be exchanged for dollars. Heaven’s view is that your money and possessions are temporary, for use during your brief time on earth. Heaven’s contention is that all you have is a gift from God, the ruler of heaven. You are a steward or overseer of “your” money, possessions, time and gifts. This implies that if you are a follower of Jesus, this world’s’ money, possessions, time, and energies are to be used under the guidance and principles of heaven’s currency.
Heaven is the other world, existing and operating at the same time you are living out your brief time on earth. Although we cannot see heaven now, it is just as real as the trees, sky, and the rest that your physical senses can experience. God has determined the currency of his kingdom, and it is far superior to any amount of money or earthly riches a person can accumulate.
Heaven’s currency is a medium of exchange for something no amount of money can buy. Heaven’s currency has bought us freedom and forgiveness from the penalty and power of sin. 1 Peter 1:18-19 reminds us of the price love has paid for us. “You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver and gold…but with the precious blood…the blood of Jesus.” Love, the currency of heaven has bought you and me.
Heaven’s currency is love. Love is the character of our Heavenly Father, a disposition and commitment to work for the well-being of you, me, and others. It is the motive behind every act of goodness. The Apostle John tells us in 1 John 4:8 that the very character, the nature of God is love. “ God is love.” He quotes Jesus saying this is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
We need some amount of money and possessions to provide for our needs in this life. But when you consider the vulnerability of money and earthly treasures, doesn’t it make sense to invest your life in the things that matter most and are eternal? Heaven’s currency isn’t destroyed by inflation. It isn’t lost in bankruptcy. You don’t leave it behind when you die. Love endures.
One of the greatest pieces of advice I ever received was while I was in college. But it didn’t come in a classroom, it came from a staff person who took the time to listen to what my twenty-year old brain and heart were trying to process. Her wise counsel was this, ” Cos, rather than seeking to be loved, concentrate on becoming a loving person.”
Becoming a loving person is what Heaven’s Currency is about. If that is what you want, I recommend that you get this book and invest some time reading and applying what it has to say.
Here’s a snippet from one of my reviews. ” This book is immensely practical, readable, erudite and lifechanging.”
